The ‘1st Conditional

for cause and effect
(if this happens, then this will happen)

How to make the 1st conditional

There is one special thing to remember in the 1st conditional:
(i) the effect uses ‘will’

– examples:

if you do this, I will give you $10
if you don’t eat, you will be hungry
she’ll kill you if you are late

There is some overlap between the 0 conditional and the 1st conditional

Sometimes the meanings of the 0 conditional (always true) and the 1st conditional (cause & effect) are very close, so either can be used:

(0 conditional) If you press this button, the light turns on.
(1st conditional) If you press this button, the light will turn on.

(0 conditional) If a cat sees a mouse, it chases it.
(1st conditional) If a cat sees a mouse, it will chase it.
